LMH Santurce, Puerto Rico 2012

About LMH

About LMH

La Respuesta has become one of Puerto Rico's leading cultural spaces and is currently looking to reconnect with the great cultural scene present in the historic Puerto Rican neighborhood of El Barrio in NYC. To this end, La Respuesta presents "Los Muros Hablan" a world famous international urban art and music festival, showcasing several of our best artistic and musical representatives thereby building a cultural bridge between NYC and Puerto Rico.

PRECEDENT

From the caves in the prehistoric age to the big cities, history has always been written on walls. There is where history recognizes the legends, customs, beliefs and secrets of their tribes and civilizations. Puerto Rico is no exception. From the Tainos to Rafael Rios Rey, from Marin to current social realities; history is documented and told through walls.

In recent years, muralism has become the largest artistic and cultural movement recorded in the history of world art. Being so democratic that anyone wanting to leave their mark can do it, some expressions of lesser importance but many others that leave legacies for the history and future generations.

"Los Muros Hablan" proposes and seeks to rescue the abandoned spaces of the city, a reflection of the social and economic decline. The project is built upon an international art movement of major cities, and included the creation of a multi-cultural urban art. The same will extended throughout October 2012 in Santurce including outdoor pieces made by renowned artists from around the world. Thanks to the all around success, we're taking our festival to an extension of our Puertorrican culture, El Barrio, NYC.

A letter from Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito

Dear Constituents and Friends,

Not long ago, I learned about the Los Muros Hablan art festival taking place annually in Santurce. From the moment I heard about this incredible event, I knew we had to bring it to El Barrio and the South Bronx. Beginning on August 19th, that vision will become reality as we launch Los Muros Hablan in New York City.

I could not be more excited to join El Museo del Barrio in welcoming a host of artists from right here in New York City, Puerto Rico and throughout Latin America, to District 8 to help bring some of our empty walls to life. This weeklong, one-of-a-kind event is about celebrating our community's largely Puerto Rican and Latino heritage, our ongoing ties to Puerto Rico, and our long-standing artistic tradition. And by focusing on the theme of "diaspora" these murals will surely resonate with all members of our diverse communities. Our neighborhoods are home to so many vibrant and historic murals, and these artists look forward to adding to our communities' beautiful public art.

With so many walls, and so many visual and musical artists coming to our district for this festival, the logistical work was challenging, and for that I have to thank El Museo del Barrio, ArtSpace, Celso González, the founder of Los Muros Hablan in Puerto Rico, José Morales, the proprietor of La Respuesta and producer of this event, and of course all of the incredibly generous sponsors listed on this site. The coming together of this event has been the result of an incredible partnership that I know will continue on for years to come as we continue to reinforce our communities' status as cultural destinations.

I look forward to seeing you at all the great activities planned for the week! As always, you can keep up with the work of my office by visiting our blog www.mmviveritod8.wordpress.com, following us on Twitter @MMViverito or facebook, YouTube and Instagram.

Gracias,
Melissa
